The Senior Project & Program Manager Lippincott Learning, is responsible for the velocity and quality of product development and for ensuring that the product meets customer user needs and delivers on the Product Manager’s vision. He/she translates the Product Manager’s strategic vision for the product into actionable items, and works with cross-functional (agile) teams to make sure he/she is executing on those items and requirements.

The Senior Project & Program Manager, Lippincott Learning, manages product development for his/her assigned products and the relationship between those products and Technology. He/she is responsible for delivering new products and existing product updates, per defined release plans and roadmaps, product maintenance/optimization, customer testing/review, proposing product roadmaps items, working with Technology/UX/QA, and signing off releases. In particular, the Senior Project & Program Manager acts as the voice of the customer in product development meetings and must therefore have a first-hand, in-depth knowledge of what users of the product value and what helps them in their workflow. The Senior Project & Program Manager reports to the Director of Product Development, Nursing, and will be part of a team of Technology Project and Program Managers working on products across the Nursing Segment. As part of the Product Development team, he/she will collaborate with his/her colleagues and supervisor in developing and implementing Technology Project and Program Manager best practices, and apply established department standards, processes, and best practices to the development of their product. As part of a Product Team, the Senior Project & Program Manager will collaborate and drive forward vision/strategy of the Product Manager and work on a cross-functional team to deliver exceptional products that meet customer needs.

This role is part of a broader product cross-function team (including Technology, Content, Product Marketing, Sales, Sales Enablement, Customer Success, Support), not all of which report to the same manager, and plays a significant role in providing the “glue” that makes this into a real team. Where the product needs to interface with other products or platforms, the Senior Project & Program Manager is responsible for engaging with other Technology Project and Program Managers and Technology.

Overall, this position requires someone who has deep experience in product development and technology. Whilst he/she is not expected to make technology decisions, not understand the detail of the coding, he/she must have sufficient understanding of technology issues and in-depth understanding of the value each release brings to the customer user and how the release will work. Above all, he/she must have (or build) deep domain knowledge of the users and their workflow that the product is designed to add value to. The Senior Project & Program Manager must have strong structuring and organizational skills, be able to prioritize ruthlessly, and exercise leadership within his/ her team and into other teams.

The person in this role can be based in our Philadelphia office or can be remote.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Through working with the Product Manager and Product Marketing, deeply understand the needs of the user

  • Run the product development process with Technology/UX on behalf of HLRP

  • Market Intelligence

  • In collaboration with the Product Manager

  • formulate market intelligence plans (surveys, focus groups, symposia, advisory boards, etc.) to gather customer insight and feedback

  • with the goal of defining and solving customer problems and driving innovation and revenue growth, analyze market feedback to inform Product Manager’s vision and plan for product development; and to help define the deliverables and scope of the product, product release, roadmap including related resources

  • Propose product road maps (to be signed off by the Product Manager) which:

  • Incorporate users and buyers from the earliest stages and throughout the product development process

  • Mitigate any issues that come up during the development process related to competitive, market and customer developments and/or resource issues

  • In conjunction with Product Manager, set and monitor product KPIs

  • Ensure products comply with required norms and standards (such as compliance) in the target markets, e.g. accessibility, discoverability, integration with other systems (electronic health record systems, learning management systems), provides reporting as needed by the customer

  • Working with Product Management and Technology/UX, ensure optimal product development by:

  • Collaborating on completion of Lean Canvas

  • Conducting appropriate experiments (wireframe reviews, clickable/paper prototypes, pilots, etc.) Analyzing, Documenting and Sharing customer feedback

  • Related to the epics and user stories defined by the Product Manager, creating the product backlog items and associated acceptance criteria and as needed testing scripts; as appropriate, creating appropriate use cases and annotated wireframes

  • Prioritizing the product backlog

  • Serving as Product Lead in Agile Scrum Ceremonies: Sprint Planning, Review and Retrospectives; Product Backlog Prioritization, Product Backlog Refinement, Product Backlog Estimating; as well as daily huddle meetings

  • Developing the Budget

  • Monitoring and Reporting of project spend vs. budget

  • As appropriate, working with external technology vendors

  • Coordinating internal and external UAT

  • Ensuring effective QA resourcing and Proposing the sign off of releases to the Product Manager

  • Recommending product modifications and product backlog items

  • Making decisions on product maintenance/ upgrades

  • Working with Product Manager and Expert Content, ensure optimal content delivery for the product by:

  • Defining content needs for the product (driven by product roadmap and above activities)

  • This could include straight pick-up of developed assets (such as an e-Book) or transformation of assets (interactive e-Book) or content/assets developed specifically for the product

  • Coordinating and defining schedule for content needs

  • Coordinating and defining budget for content deliverables

  • Monitoring content deliverables

  • Working with the Product Manager and Product Marketer, ensure effective product launch:

  • Managing development of product documentation including but not limited to user’s guides, help files, product maps, etc.

  • Presenting product at quarterly release meetings, and other associated training meetings (Sales Meetings)

  • Coordinating with Customer Success on product training deliverables including production product training outcomes (PTOs) for product/product releases

  • Providing materials as needed for Marketing and Customer Success to develop sales tools such as demo sites

  • Serving as front-line product escalation resource, escalating to Product Manager as appropriate

  • Managing the wider “product team”

  • Effectively managing upwards to the Product Manager for Lippincott Learning and Director of Product Management, Nursing Solutions

  • Build relationship with product marketers and provide input into the product information database, which includes product specifications, markets, features, and benefits

  • Maintain excellent relationships with Technology (Product and Platform)

  • Working with the Product Development Team

  • Collaborate with the development and definition of standards, processes and best practices related to product development and the Senior Product Owner role

  • Apply standards, processes and best practices to product development activities for his/her product

  • Effectively report on product via appropriate status venues and artifacts during the product development cycle

Job Qualifications:

Education: College degree (BA/BS) or equivalent experience required. MBA is preferable.

Experience:

Required:

  • 3-5 years’ experience in digital product development and/ or Technology.

  • Experience in academic publishing (particularly nursing education) and its customers’/users’ needs or the ability to build this knowledge

  • Strong knowledge of every stage of the product development process from concept to post-launch

  • Demonstrated experience understanding user needs and market trends that are successfully translated into practical plans

  • Experience developing and leading the execution of product development

  • Experience of running customer experiments, contextual inquiry and analysis

  • Understanding of Technology opportunities, constraints and choices

  • Structured thinker who is able to see “the wood from the trees”

  • Ability to prioritize

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • Strong project management skills

  • Ability to develop business plans

  • Ability to develop user requirements, user experience

  • Negotiating and problem-solving skills

  • Ability and willingness to travel extensively to meet business goals and objectives

Preferred:

  • General knowledge of the healthcare market

  • Experience in in academic publishing (particularly nursing education)

Travel Requirements:

  • Up to 15% travel required (if not located in Philadelphia or Baltimore office)
