Johns Hopkins University Laboratory Technician in Baltimore, Maryland
The Lab Technician is responsible for the transport, processing and shipment of specimens. The Laboratory Technician will be expected to perform accessioning, processing, and shipping duties in a service laboratory with minimal supervision according to approved Study Compliance Instructions (SCI). The Laboratory Technician will be required to work in the multiple departments within CPC on a rotating shift as assigned by management.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Follows Good Laboratory Practices.
Collects, processes, documents, stores and ships patient specimens according to Study Protocol.
Helps organize and maintain the freezer inventory.
Is responsible for the shipment of day of collection and batched specimens.
Performs internal transfers of specimens to labs within the Cancer Center.
Troubleshoots specimens that come to lab with missing information.
Maintains specimens processed in the appropriate database and completes appropriate documentation for all specimens processed.
Assist in providing notification to study teams when a specific study’s processing or shipping supply inventories are low and in need of reorder.
Assisting in query investigation and resolution.
Has the ability to accommodate a fast-paced laboratory schedule.
Must have proficiency using Microsoft Office products.
Must work on a rotating shift as assigned by Management.
Other duties as assigned by the Core Director and/or Operations Director.
Equipment, Machine, or Tool Requirements:
- General computer skills, with experience with Microsoft Office
High School Diploma or GED required.
Experience working in a lab environment or undergraduate laboratory experience related to normal course requirements
Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Experience with shipping specimens and DOT/IATA Dangerous Good Shipping Certification preferred.
Special Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities / Competencies:
- Good oral and written communication skills.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
