University of Maryland, Baltimore Library Services Specialist in Baltimore, Maryland

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Health Sciences & Human Services Library (HS/HSL)is currently recruiting for aLibrary Services Specialist. Under general supervision, the Library Services Specialist performs assigned tasks in one or more functional areas of the Library’s Resources Division. This position participates in all document delivery, borrowing and lending functions, including ensuring all requests are processed under the performance standards specified, and providing backup assistance to staff. The Specialist provides high quality customer service and communicates the library’s mission and policies. The Library Services Specialist may also assist in other Resource Division projects.

The incumbent must be a highly productive, detail-oriented, and accurate worker with the ability to use initiative and make appropriate judgments. This person must be able to work independently and as part of a team. The Library Services Specialist must also be flexible and able to work in a high-demand environment.

This position reports to the Resource Sharing Supervisor.

*Primary Duties: *

  • Processes all interlibrary loan borrowing/lending requests, documents delivery, and direct purchases. Investigates and resolves problematic requests. Provides backup for Resource Sharing staff.

  • Assists customers in using ILL system ILLiad to place requests and retrieve results. Communicates ILL policies to users. Addresses customer concerns and complaints or escalates to the supervisor as appropriate.

  • Monitors and reports any copyright violations to the supervisor. Ensures compliance with copyright laws and follows CONTU guidelines. Maintains copyright compliance information in the ILL system.

  • Participates in the gathering of Resource Sharing statistics and in preparing billing reports for processing by library administration.

  • Participates in the planning and implementation of new services or process improvements.

  • Identifies and resolves problems related to access and use of library information resources and services.

Education:Bachelor’s degree.

Experience:One (1) year of experience working in a library.

Preferred Experience:

  • Previous experience with interlibrary loan systems, ILLiad preferred.

  • Previous customer service experience.

*Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: *

  • General knowledge and understanding of the nature and function of libraries; of library services, standards and procedures; of bibliographic records, publishing and publication formats, and library information storage and retrieval systems. Skill in using a computer to input and retrieve information; in interpreting and applying library policies and procedures; and in analyzing problems of a moderately complex nature.

  • Ability to communicate effectively; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library users and staff; to provide guidance and instruction to ILL technicians; to work independently; and to exercise initiative in improving the service and customer experience.

OTHER:Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

Based on the duties of this position, selected candidates are not eligible to participate in the Bargaining Unit (Union).

*Salary Range: *$40,000 - $42,000
