Johns Hopkins University Software Engineer in Baltimore, Maryland

General Position Summary:

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing technical expertise and support to the Infectious Disease Dynamic (IDD) team, specifically to refine their existing SEIR COVID-19 model. This includes but is not limited to building out the model to include additional scenarios, new types of output (e.g. economic estimates), and to account for the changing trajectory of COVID-19 epidemiology. Additional expert input on efficiency and functioning of the model may also be required.

The ideal candidate will possess technical expertise in engineering, computer science, model building, infectious disease epidemiology, and have an appreciation of the how modeling systems work in the context of a rapidly evolving pandemic event.

In this role, the successful candidate will work collaboratively with and, in some cases, oversee other professionals to refine the current COVID-19 model. As such, the successful candidate will understand the “big picture” of this work and possesses the soft skills necessary to coordinate with various people working in multiple locations to accomplish the team’s objectives in a fast paced and evolving environment

Job Scope/Complexity:

The successful candidate will be responsible for updating and reengineering parts of the model based on the needed output and changing nature of both COVID-epidemiology and scenarios being considered by decisionmakers who will use the model estimates.

Job Responsibilities:

  • The Infectious Disease Dynamics (IDD) group within the Department of Epidemiology of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is uniquely positioned within Johns Hopkins to design, build, deploy and interpret model estimates for COVID-19 planning purposes.

Required Education:

  • Bachelor's degree (or foreign equivalent) in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Information Technology, Electronic Engineering, or a related field.

  • Additional experience may be substituted for education.

Required Experience:

  • Five years of related work experience with computer systems and applications.

  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
