BRMi Systems Engineer in Frederick, Maryland

We are looking for a Systems Engineer to design, install, administer, and optimize servers and related components to achieve high performance of the enterprise services that we provide to our customers. A successful candidate must enjoy working through challenges, finding pain points within the organization, and presenting creative solutions, as well as a desire to keep their knowledge of both hardware and software trends and advancements up to date. In addition, you will be responsible for ensuring the availability of client/server enterprise management applications, configuring new implementations, and developing processes and procedures for ongoing management of the server environment.

Good communications skills are a must as you will need to communicate with a variety of interdisciplinary teams and users.


Strategy & Planning

  • Assist the Systems Infrastructure Manager in the development of strategies for enterprise implementations; architect the infrastructure required to support those strategies.

  • Assist the Systems Infrastructure Manager in the design and review of new server systems and applications; conduct capacity planning as needed.

  • Provide system management and administration functions, including requirements analysis, systems configuration, and performance monitoring.

  • Ensure the availability, reliability and security of the Windows and Linux server operating systems in physical, virtual, and cloud environments.

  • Install and maintain hardware, software, and applications.

  • Evaluate user needs or problems and takes appropriate action to resolve them.

  • Participate in the integration of hardware and software which will include interfacing with vendors for support.

  • Adhere to configuration management principles across development, stage, and production environments.

Operational Management

  • Prioritize and respond to help desk tickets as appropriate.

  • Serve as cornerstone for escalating server issues; provide timely response to customers.

  • Plan and implement server upgrades, maintenance fixes, and vendor-supplied patches.

  • Manage supporting server infrastructure.

  • Recommend and execute modifications to server environment to improve efficiency, reliability, and performance.

  • Develop and maintain training materials and server\systems documentation.

  • Other duties as assigned.


Knowledge & Experience

  • At least five (5) years’ equivalent work experience in a technical position responsible for managing server environments.

  • Knowledge of any of the following is a plus: Windows Server Technology, CentOS, IIS, Apache Web and/or Tomcat, Microsoft AD, BigFix, Puppet/Satellite/Forman, VMWare, SolarWinds, containermanagement, cloud infra support, EKS, Cloud Formation.

  • Ideally, a candidate would feel comfortable with Windows Server and Linux however proficiency higher in one is sufficient.

  • Proficient in shell and/or PowerShell scripting. Other scripting languages a plus.

  • Experience installing, configuring, and maintaining all manners of server hardware and associated network equipment.

  • Experience with server performance tuning and monitoring tools.

  • Familiarity with TCP/IP v4 and v6, and operating system configuration.

  • Proven knowledge of systems development life cycle methodologies.

Formal Education & Certification

  • Certifications in A+, N+ and Linux+, or related experience is desired


  • Ability to obtain U.S. Government Public Trust Security Clearance
