Job Description SummaryEngineering Manager

Responsible for managing a manufacturing plant's sustaining engineering technology function. Accountable for the sustained operation, engineering and technology aspects of manufacturing equipment and processes required to meet the plant’s production volume, efficiency, quality, safety and cost objectives. Works closely with the Plant Manager and Operations Engineering team to specify and provide manufacturing systems and automation equipment to meet goals of the business. As part of the plant's leadership team, is a member of the plant’s Executive Steering Committee (ESC).

Manages a team of engineers and technicians charged with maintenance, optimization, and upgrade of existing manufacturing equipment to achieve plant’s manufacturing goals. Participates in the purchase and install, start-up and validation of new equipment and/or processes as required to meet product specifications, requirements and manufacturing expectations. This position reports to the Plant Manager or Director of Engineering, IDS Operations.

Engineering Manager

Works closely with the Plant Manager and Operations Engineering team to specify and provide manufacturing systems and automation equipment to meet goals of the business. Manages a team of engineers and technicians charged with maintenance, optimization, and upgrade of existing manufacturing equipment to achieve plant’s manufacturing goals. This position reports to the Plant Manager or Director of Engineering, IDS Operations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

•Responsible for scheduled and un-scheduled maintenance for existing and new manufacturing equipment and processes in a manufacturing plant.

•Assesses resource skill requirements, labor loading, prioritization of work and time allocation for sustaining engineering activities and projects within a manufacturing plant.

•Drives robustness evaluation and process/equipment improvements for new manufacturing and technology processes.

•Establishes and drives effective project engineering management practices to plan and execute projects. Coaches team members in successful integration of structured development processes, engineering and risk management methods to insure a project's technical and business success. Maintains active involvement in all major projects for the manufacturing plant. Capable of taking on and completing sustaining engineering projects as well as overseeing the work of team.

•Must be familiar with GMP's, ISO requirements, the IVD Directive, the CE Mark, Six Sigma and LEAN principles. Should have a working knowledge for validation of manufacturing processes within the IVD or pharmaceutical industries. Using BD's validation methodology, works with QMRC to plan and validate process and equipment changes or start-up.

•Manages plant engineering and maintenance staff including selection and mentoring of high caliber manufacturing engineering and technical maintenance professionals with required skills and abilities.

•Carries out HR management responsibilities including hiring, terminations, job assignments, re-assignments, performance management, training, professional development of staff, etc. Familiar with evaluation and hiring of consultants and technical contractors when appropriate and required.

•Carries out all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills:

Candidate or incumbent must have engineering and management knowledge and skills as follows:

•Possesses solid, broad knowledge base of engineering fundamentals as applied to manufacturing equipment and processes with strong technical, analytical, problem solving, and decision-making skills.

•Good working knowledge of electromechanical and software controlled manufacturing processes. Must be familiar with manufacturing of chemical and biological media components. Must be familiar with multiple manufacturing technologies to provide technical guidance to plant and staff for the key core technologies used by a specific plant. Examples are: surface treatment, material feeding/transport, liquid filling, capping/closing, material blending and drying, primary and secondary packaging.

•Must have a broad engineering management experience base covering electrical, software, mechanical, chemical, packaging, validation, and maintenance engineering.

•Must be accomplished in developing or maintaining a skilled, effective and proactive manufacturing engineering group aligned with business and organizational objectives and capable of delivering products and/or processes as required to meet the business objectives. Must have demonstrated the ability to select, motivate, develop, and manage engineering technician workforce. Must be knowledgeable of effective management practices for technical professionals and projects. Must be capable of selecting and implementing contractor/consultants to augment the departmental resource pool when necessary to provide skills/capabilities to accomplish goals.

•Must have a demonstrated track record of product and/ or technology transfer for IVD or pharmaceutical products.

Required Education and Experience:

•BS degree in Engineering

• Prefer 10+ years hands-on relevant engineering experience

•4+ years of experience in an operations or manufacturing environment

•3+ years engineering management experience
