What is it that we do at Colonial Pipeline Company?

Colonial Pipeline is the largest refined products pipeline in the United States, transporting more than 100 million gallons or 2.5 million barrels per day. Colonial transports various grades of gasoline, diesel fuel, home heating oil, jet fuel, and fuels for the U.S. military through a pipeline system. Colonial transports approximately 45 percent of all fuel consumed on the East Coast, providing refined products to more than 50 million Americans.

About Associate Operator Position

The Associate Operator is an on-the-job training to develop skills and abilities in the maintenance and field operations of the pipeline facility while obtaining Operator Qualification. As an Associate Operator, you will be performing tasks involving general maintenance of pipeline and station assets. Activities may include physical labor such as, but not limited to, painting, digging with hand tools, raking gravel, unloading trucks and/or inspecting tanks. You are someone who fosters a productive, team-oriented environment. At some locations, the Associate Operator performs inspections of hazardous waste drums and drum collection sites.

What You Get to Do:

  • Participate in Colonial's maintenance self-study program and attend Company coordinated classes and seminars to enhance technical skills/knowledge.

  • Perform tasks involving inspecting, general maintenance, preventative maintenance or minor repair of pipeline and station assets.

  • Collect and perform quality assurance test on petroleum samples.

  • Operate a variety of light and heavy tools or equipment in the performance of tasks.

  • Document operational activities accurately and timely accordingly to policy and procedures.

  • Transfer tools, parts, equipment, and supplies to and from workstations and other areas.

  • Monitor and correctly respond to alarms caused by normal, abnormal and emergency conditions.

What You Bring to the Table:

  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) from an accredited education intuition. Will consider a combination of experience and/or education.

  • Live within a 60-minute commute of the work location.

  • Valid Driver’s License and acceptable driving record to drive company and personal vehicles to perform required tasks.

  • Gift for having a quick learning curve.

  • Ability to work 8-hour and/or 12-hour rotating shifts at all hours, including holidays, and/or weekends as required; subject to call-out and occasional overtime.

Physical Requirements & Work Conditions:

Work indoors and outdoors at all hours in all weather conditions in close proximity to refined petroleum products. Physical mobility to sit, stand, reach, pull, push and bend. Climb stairs, vertical ladders up to 10 ft. and tank steps as high as 60 ft. Color recognition for control panel indicator lights and to analyze product colors; ability to lift 20lbs. Normal visual acuity for reading VDT screen, pressure charts and control panel counters. Physical strength to open and close manually operated valves and pressure vessel (tank, strainer and filter) closures.

This is a Department of Transportation (DOT) covered job and is subject to all applicable regulatory requirements such as testing for the presence of prohibited drugs and alcohol as defined under 49 CFR Part 199 as a condition of employment, to include pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable cause/suspicion and fit for duty testing.

Colonial adheres to PHMSA's (Pipeline Hazardous Material Safety Administration) Control Room Management Rule, and as such, incumbents in this role must live within 60 minutes (90 minutes for previously grandfathered employees) from their designated work location and notify management of any changes to their home address while in this role.
